Three tiny baskets for Halloween treats

The Halloween Basket Trio is a quick seasonal project with three personalities: a pumpkin skull, a green Frankenstein, and a grey vampire with a tiny bow tie. Make one for a place setting, fill several with wrapped sweets, or use the trio as cheerful desk catchalls after trick-or-treat night.

Fay Lyth of Stitch by Fay is credited for the original trio concept. The HookElla instructions below give you a complete, original mini-basket recipe; the Stitch by Fay page and Ravelry listing are retained for attribution.

Materials

Gather:

  • DK-weight yarn in light grey, black, purple, green, orange, white, and a small amount of pink;
  • a 4.0 mm (G) crochet hook for the basket body;
  • a 3.0 mm hook for eyes, ears, bow ties, and other small details;
  • stitch marker, yarn needle, scissors, and optional fabric glue or embroidery floss.

The source uses two strands held together for the main basket, either from two skeins or from both the inside and outside of one skein. The smaller hook and single strand keep facial details neat.

Why the construction is beginner-friendly

All three baskets start from the same compact circular base and are worked upward in a continuous single-crochet spiral. A marked first stitch keeps the rounds easy to follow. Once the basic cup is complete, each character is created with a small colour change and a few surface or sewn details.

The pumpkin version gets its skull face and orange-and-black contrast. Frankenstein uses a green body, dark hair and simple facial features. The vampire combines a pale body with a widow’s-peak silhouette, fangs, and a purple bow tie. Because the base is shared, you can practice the construction once and then repeat it with a new character.

The finished baskets measure approximately 2.75 × 2.75 inches (7 × 7 cm). Tension is not critical, but changing the yarn or hook will change the final size.

HookElla mini-basket instructions

Work the basket with two strands of DK yarn and the 4 mm hook. Mark the first stitch and crochet in a continuous spiral.

  1. Make a magic ring and work 8 sc. Increase evenly to 16, 24, 32, and 40 stitches over the next four rounds.
  2. Work one round in BLO sc to create the base-to-wall turn. Continue 9 rounds of sc with 40 stitches. Add one final slip-stitch round for a firm rim and fasten off.
  3. For the pumpkin skull, use orange for the body, black for the final rim, and embroider two eyes, a nose, and a wide smiling mouth. Add a few short vertical stitches to suggest a skull nose and teeth.
  4. For Frankenstein, work the body in green. Add a black surface-slip-stitch hairline with two short points, then embroider the mouth and attach or sew small round eyes. Add tiny green ear circles if desired.
  5. For the vampire, work the body in light grey. Surface-slip stitch a black widow’s peak, embroider fangs, and make a small purple bow from chains and treble stitches. Sew the bow below the mouth.
  6. Use the 3 mm hook and one strand for eyes, ears, and bow details. Secure every tail inside the basket and test the decorations before filling with wrapped candy.

Cute, useful, and giftable

Fill each basket with wrapped candy, a tea bag, hair ties, stickers, or a tiny note. They make fun party favours, classroom-safe decorations, and inexpensive handmade gifts. Keep the trio together in a bowl, or let each character welcome a guest at the table.

For a softer finish, sew details in place. Fabric glue can reduce sewing for display-only baskets, but allow it to cure fully and keep glued pieces away from young children. These are small baskets, so use them for lightweight items rather than sharp tools or heavy objects.

Make the whole trio

Start with the design whose colours are already in your stash, then make the other two using the same base. A single evening can produce all three, and the character details are ideal for experimenting with expression and placement.
