This calm mint-and-cream baby blanket is designed for generous giving. The open shell texture keeps the fabric light, two slim white bands add a quiet stripe rhythm, and a soft-white scalloped border frames every size.
A soft blanket made to be given
The Charity Baby Blanket is a gentle, practical make for a hospital donation, a new-parent gift, or a cosy layer at home. Pale mint keeps the mood soothing, while two narrow white bands give the eye a place to rest. The shell texture adds little windows of air without making the blanket feel flimsy, and the soft-white border finishes the edges with small scallops.
This is a complete original HookElla pattern written in US terminology. Work the size that suits your recipient, or use the measurement checkpoints to create a custom rectangle.
Materials and gauge
- #4 worsted-weight yarn: mint main colour (MC), white contrast (CC), and soft white border;
- 5.0 mm (H/8) crochet hook;
- yarn needle, scissors, measuring tape, and removable stitch markers;
- rustproof pins and a flat surface for blocking.
Aim for three shell groups across 4 inches and six texture rows high. The shell fabric should lie flat with small open spaces. If your swatch is too tight, go up a hook size; if it is loose and lacy, go down a size. Always wash the swatch before committing to a donation blanket.

The HookElla construction image shows the original mint, two-band, and scalloped-border sequence.
Abbreviations and special shell
ch chain, sc single crochet, dc double crochet, sl st slip stitch, sp space, sk skip, rep repeat, MC main colour, CC contrast colour.
HookElla shell: (3 dc, ch 2, dc) in the same space. The ch-2 opening is where the next row’s shell is placed.
Choose your size
Use the nearest size below. The starting chain must be 4 more than a multiple of 5 so the shell groups fit evenly. Chain until the relaxed foundation measures the target width, then adjust by one 5-chain unit if needed.
| Size | Finished target | Texture rows | White bands |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preemie | 25 × 25 in | 36 | rows 13–14 and 25–26 |
| Receiving | 31 × 33 in | 48 | rows 17–18 and 33–34 |
| Crib | 41 × 43 in | 60 | rows 21–22 and 41–42 |
The row counts are a planning guide. Stop when your blanket reaches the target height and keep both white bands narrow and evenly spaced.
Blanket body
- With MC, chain the width you selected. Foundation row: dc in the fourth chain from the hook, skip 4 chains, work a HookElla shell in the next chain, and repeat shell groups across until the final 3 chains. Skip 2 chains and dc in the last chain. Turn.
- Texture row: ch 3 (counts as the first dc), work a HookElla shell in each ch-2 space across, then dc in the final stitch. Turn.
- Repeat the texture row. Keep the first and last dc aligned so the sides stay straight.
- First white band: At the band row, fasten off MC and join CC in the first stitch. Work the same shell row for two rows. Change back to MC at the end of the second CC row by completing the final yarn-over with MC.
- Continue the shell repeat in MC until the second band position. Work exactly two CC rows, then return to MC.
- Finish the selected number of texture rows in MC. Do not add a third stripe; the design uses exactly two white bands.
Keep colour tails on the wrong side and weave them into the shell fabric after every band. If the last row ends with a partial shell, adjust the starting chain before continuing rather than forcing extra stitches at the edge.
Soft-white scalloped border
Join soft white at a lower corner. Work one round of sc around the blanket, placing 3 sc in each corner and spacing the side stitches evenly. Join with a sl st.
On the next round, work skip 2 stitches, 5 dc in the next stitch, skip 2 stitches, sl st in the next stitch around each side. At each corner, work a sl st into the corner stitch, ch 2, then 5 dc in the next stitch before resuming the scallop rhythm. If a side does not divide perfectly, absorb the difference in the two stitches nearest the corner; do not let the border ruffle.
For a firmer edge, add one plain sc round before the scallop round. Keep the soft-white border the same width on all four sides.
Blocking, care, and giving
Weave every end securely, then damp-block the blanket to the target measurements. Pin the corners square and let the piece dry completely. A light wash also helps the shell spaces settle and makes the finished gift feel fresh.
Use yarn labelled washable and baby-appropriate. Wash according to the label, avoid loose buttons or detachable decorations, and inspect the blanket for open seams before gifting. For charity donations, ask the receiving organization about preferred dimensions, fibres, and laundering requirements.
The shell texture is warm without being bulky, and the two white bands make the blanket easy to recognize in a donation pile. Fold it with a simple care card, tie it with a soft yarn bow, and pass along something made to comfort.
