About this pattern

Pastel Confetti is a soft, playful beanie with raised puff stitches in a pastel variegated yarn, a solid seafoam-aqua band, a softly gathered crown, and a large white faux-fur pom-pom. The band is crocheted first as a joined tube, then the textured body is worked upward in joined rounds. This is an original HookElla stitch schedule inspired by the broad look of Lauren Brown’s pastel pom-pom beanie; it is not a transcription or row-by-row rewrite of her pattern.

The instructions below are complete for one adult-size target. HookElla has not physically crocheted or fitted a sample. All gauge, circumference, height, and yarn-use figures are estimates to guide a swatch and fit check, not measured results or a promise of fit.

Materials

  • Medium/worsted-weight (#4) yarn: approximately 130–175 yd (119–160 m) pastel variegated for the body and 50–65 yd (46–59 m) solid seafoam or sage-aqua for the band; 180–240 yd (165–219 m) total estimated.
  • 6 mm (J/10) hook, or size needed to meet the provisional gauge.
  • Large white faux-fur pom-pom, about 4–5 in (10–13 cm), with a sew-on loop or button attachment.
  • Stitch marker, measuring tape, scissors, yarn needle, and optional small button for a removable pom-pom.

The source designer identifies a worsted yarn and a 6 mm hook in her own sample; this HookElla pattern uses those broad material characteristics, not her stitch instructions. Choose a soft yarn whose label and care requirements suit a winter hat.

Finished size and fit

One adult size is planned for a head circumference of roughly 21–23 in (53–58 cm). The target relaxed lower-edge circumference is about 21⅓ in (54 cm), with enough give to stretch over the head. Target finished height from lower edge to gathered crown is approximately 8–9 in (20–23 cm), excluding the pom-pom. These are gauge-based estimates only.

Gauge and swatch check

No HookElla sample gauge has been measured. Use these as provisional targets with the specified yarn and hook:

  • Band: 18 sc and 12 joined rounds = 4 in (10 cm), measured relaxed and unstretched.
  • Body: 9 puff-and-gap repeats across 4 in (10 cm) and 6 puff rounds in 4 in (10 cm). A repeat means one puff plus its following ch-1 space.

For the band swatch, ch 21 and work 20 sc across, then continue in joined or turned sc for at least 14 rows; measure an interior area after the swatch relaxes. For the body, make a small sample with at least 12 puff-and-gap repeats across and 6 rounds high, using the exact puff defined below. Measure repeat width and round height without stretching. If the band and body do not have compatible stretch, change hook size and swatch both again before beginning.

The Yarnivo Gauge Calculator can help convert your swatch count into a measured gauge; it cannot confirm the hat’s fit or replace the fabric stretch check.

At the target band gauge, 96 sc × 4 ÷ 18 = 21⅓ in (54 cm) around. The puff fabric is planned at 48 repeats × 4 ÷ 9 = 21⅓ in (54 cm). Ten puff rounds at 6 rounds per 4 in project to 6⅔ in (17 cm) of body height; five band rounds at 12 rounds per 4 in project to 1⅔ in (4.2 cm). The un-gathered height therefore projects to about 8⅓ in (21 cm). Gathering and real fabric behavior may change that; these calculations are not physical fit tests.

Abbreviations (US terms)

  • rep — repeat
  • sc — single crochet
  • sl st — slip stitch
  • sp — space
  • st(s) — stitch(es)

Special stitches and construction notes

Puff stitch (puff): Yarn over, insert the hook in the indicated stitch or space, yarn over and draw up a loop to the height of the active round. Repeat that same yarn-over/insert/draw-up sequence two more times in the same place. There are 7 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all 7 loops. Make 1 ch to close the puff; this is the puff’s top/lock chain and is not a separate counted stitch. For the first textured round only, work the puff into a band stitch; in later rounds work each puff into the designated ch-1 space.

Puff-and-gap repeat: After closing a puff with its lock ch, make one additional ch. This second chain is the gap between puffs. The pattern has one puff lock chain and one separate gap chain per repeat. On later rounds, work into the gap chain only; do not work into the puff lock chain.

Round joins: The beginning ch 1 at the start of a round is for height only and never counts. Join with a sl st into the top/lock chain of the first puff (or into the first sc on the band). Do not turn. After joining a puff round, sl st into the first adjacent gap space to position for the next round. These positioning slip stitches do not count.

Complete pattern instructions

Lower band — solid aqua

The band is a joined tube and sets the hat circumference. Check that the foundation ring fits comfortably around the intended head before crocheting the remaining band rounds.

Foundation

  • Foundation: With solid aqua and a 6 mm hook, ch 96 loosely. Check for twists, then join to the first chain with a sl st to form a ring. Do not count the joining sl st as a stitch.
  • Round 1: Ch 1; sc in each chain around. Join to the first sc. 96 sts. (sc)
  • Round 2: Ch 1; sc in each stitch around. Join to the first sc. 96 sts. (sc)
  • Round 3: Repeat Round 2. 96 sts. (sc)
  • Round 4: Repeat Round 2. 96 sts. (sc)
  • Round 5: Repeat Round 2. 96 sts. (sc)

The band is five rounds high. At the provisional 12-rounds-per-4-in sc gauge it measures about 1⅔ in (4.2 cm). Do not fold it; it remains the narrow solid lower edge shown in the finished photo.

Textured body — pastel variegated yarn

Join the variegated yarn with a sl st in any band stitch. The first body round converts the 96 band stitches into 48 evenly spaced puff-and-gap repeats: each repeat uses two band stitches. Place a marker in the first puff lock chain to track the round join.

  • Body Round 1 (transition): Join the variegated yarn in any band stitch and ch 1. Repeat [puff in the next unworked band stitch, ch 1, skip the next band stitch] 48 times, beginning the first puff in the same band stitch that holds the joining slip stitch. Join with a sl st into the puff lock chain of the first puff. 48 sts. (puffs) and 48 ch-1 gaps. Check that all 96 band stitches have been used exactly once: 48 receive a puff and 48 are skipped.
  • Body Round 2: Sl st into the first adjacent ch-1 gap; ch 1. Work a puff in that same gap, then ch 1. Work [puff in the next ch-1 gap, ch 1] in each of the remaining gaps around. Join with a sl st into the puff lock chain of the first puff. 48 sts. (puffs) and 48 ch-1 gaps. Do not turn.
  • Body Round 3: Repeat Body Round 2. 48 sts. (puffs) and 48 ch-1 gaps.
  • Body Round 4: Repeat Body Round 2. 48 sts. (puffs) and 48 ch-1 gaps.
  • Body Round 5: Repeat Body Round 2. 48 sts. (puffs) and 48 ch-1 gaps.
  • Body Round 6: Repeat Body Round 2. 48 sts. (puffs) and 48 ch-1 gaps.
  • Body Round 7: Repeat Body Round 2. 48 sts. (puffs) and 48 ch-1 gaps.
  • Body Round 8: Repeat Body Round 2. 48 sts. (puffs) and 48 ch-1 gaps.
  • Body Round 9: Repeat Body Round 2. 48 sts. (puffs) and 48 ch-1 gaps.
  • Body Round 10: Repeat Body Round 2. 48 sts. (puffs) and 48 ch-1 gaps.

Fasten off after Body Round 10, leaving a 20 in (50 cm) tail for gathering. The pastel yarn’s color changes will appear wherever they naturally fall; no fixed number of puffs or rounds per color is intended. If the color repeat pools into an unwanted solid band, begin the variegated yarn at a different point in its color sequence rather than cutting it into many short pieces.

Assembly: gather the crown

Thread the long tail through a yarn needle. From the inside, pass it through every puff lock chain around the final opening, taking care to catch the actual top of all 48 puffs and not only the loose gap chains. Pull a little at a time, distributing the gathers evenly. When the opening is nearly closed, pass through several opposing fabric loops to close the center. Secure with several small stitches across the remaining opening, then weave the tail securely on the inside. Do not pull so abruptly that the yarn or fabric breaks.

Add the faux-fur pom-pom

Center the white faux-fur pom-pom over the gathered crown. For a fixed pom-pom, sew its attachment loop firmly to the crown through several strong fabric loops, then secure the thread on the inside. For a removable style, sew a small button to the inside over the crown and fasten the pom-pom loop around it. Tug gently to check security before wearing; keep all attachment hardware inaccessible to small children.

Finishing and care

Weave in the band and body yarn tails on the inside, following the stitch direction for several stitches before trimming. Check the circumference and depth on the intended wearer or a head form. Follow the yarn label for washing and drying; remove a detachable pom-pom first. Avoid pressing the raised puffs flat.

Fit adjustments and troubleshooting

  • Band count and circumference: The 96-stitch band is a target for an adult circumference near 21–23 in, not a guaranteed size. If your sc gauge is different, calculate a band stitch count from your swatch: desired relaxed circumference × your stitches per inch. Keep the count even, then make half as many puffs in the transition round. Recheck puff width; do not assume the band and body stretch identically.
  • Band is too tight or loose: Adjust the foundation count by an even number and work one sc into each chain. For a small change, use increments of 4 stitches (2 puff repeats) and compare the new ring with the measured head circumference before continuing.
  • Puffs look crowded or sparse: Recheck the body swatch at 9 puff-and-gap repeats per 4 in. A different yarn or tension changes how much space each repeat occupies.
  • Gaps appear between rounds: Make the separate gap chain consistently, work each new puff into a gap (never into the puff lock chain), and keep the joining slip stitch loose.
  • Crown closes unevenly: Ensure the needle passes through all 48 puff lock chains. Tighten in small increments and redistribute the folds before securing.
  • Pom-pom feels insecure: Reattach through several fabric loops or use a sew-on button on the inside. Do not rely on a single strand or the gathered yarn tail alone.
  • Color placement differs from the photo: Variegated yarns change at different rates. The stitch counts create the same raised texture and solid band, but exact pastel stripe placement depends on the chosen yarn and where its color sequence begins.

Frequently asked questions

Is the gauge tested?

No. The stated gauges are provisional targets selected for this original pattern. Make both swatches and measure them before relying on the adult-size estimate.

Does the construction infographic show every round?

No. It is an optional milestone illustration, not a complete pattern. Its labels include incomplete and conflicting stitch counts, so it is not included with this article. Follow the written pattern above for every round and count.

Can I make the band in the same variegated yarn?

You can, but the pictured design has a solid aqua band. A solid contrasting yarn makes the lower edge distinct and avoids using the pastel color changes in that section.

Is the pom-pom required?

No. It is an optional finishing detail. The crown is gathered and secured before the pom-pom is attached.

Helpful questions

Is this Lauren Brown's Cozy Pom Pom Beanie pattern?

No. This is a separate HookElla pattern worked in joined rounds from the lower band upward, using a puff-and-chain texture. Lauren Brown is credited at the end for broad visual inspiration; her instructions and photographs are not reproduced.

Has this adult size been physically tested?

No. The circumference, height, gauge, and yarn quantities are planning estimates. Swatch the band and puff fabric, then check the hat's stretch and depth before adding the pom-pom.

Can I use a different variegated yarn?

Yes. Choose a medium/worsted yarn with a soft pastel color change and check the puff gauge. Different color-repeat lengths will create different stripe placement; the exact color bands are not prescribed.

Can I leave off the faux-fur pom-pom?

Yes. Secure the gathered crown as written and omit the pom-pom, or attach a removable one with its manufacturer's loop and a sewn-in button on the inside.
