A tiny dumpling with its own basket

The Perfect Fit Dumpling and Basket is a small, satisfying amigurumi set: a plump white dumpling nestles inside a warm brown basket, while a removable lid turns the piece into a miniature take-along container. The basket is sized around the dumpling, so the set looks finished whether it is open or closed.

Sweet Softies created the original dumpling-and-basket concept. HookElla’s instructions below are an original recipe with new round counts and shaping. The Ravelry listing and Sweet Softies source page are included for designer credit.

Materials

  • bulky #5 chenille yarn in white and brown;
  • 5 mm crochet hook for the dumpling;
  • 6 mm crochet hook for the basket and lid;
  • stuffing;
  • yarn needle, scissors, and a stitch marker;
  • optional 12 mm safety eyes, black embroidery yarn, and pink yarn for cheeks.

Use US terminology. The basket and dumpling are worked in continuous rounds; move the marker to the first stitch after every round. The finished closed basket should measure about 3½ inches across and 4 inches high.

The HookElla construction image accompanies the pattern steps below.

Dumpling — white, 5 mm hook

The dumpling is a rounded, lightly pointed bun. Keep the stitches firm but do not over-tighten chenille.

  1. Base: Make a magic ring and work 6 sc. Round 2: inc around (12). Round 3: sc, inc around (18). Round 4: 2 sc, inc around (24). Round 5: 3 sc, inc around (30). Round 6: 4 sc, inc around (36).
  2. Body: Work 6 rounds of sc with 36 stitches. If the fabric cups sharply, add one more even round; the shape should be a shallow, rounded bowl before stuffing.
  3. Crown shaping: Round 13: 4 sc, invdec around (30). Round 14: 3 sc, invdec around (24). Round 15: 2 sc, invdec around (18). Add stuffing in small pieces and smooth the surface as you go.
  4. Close: Round 16: sc, invdec around (12). Round 17: invdec around (6). Cut a long tail, thread it through the remaining stitches, pull closed, and knot inside.
  5. Top knot: Bring the tail to the top centre, make a small 6-sc ring, and work two short rounds without increases. Slip stitch closed and tuck the tail down through the dumpling. This creates the little gathered knot.
  6. Face: Place safety eyes two stitches apart and slightly below the widest point, or embroider two small black dots. Add a tiny curved mouth and two pink blush marks. Secure all tails inside.

Basket body — brown, 6 mm hook

The basket uses a firm flat base, a back-loop turning ridge, and low cylindrical walls.

  1. Make a magic ring and work 6 sc. Round 2: inc around (12). Round 3: sc, inc around (18). Round 4: 2 sc, inc around (24). Round 5: 3 sc, inc around (30). Round 6: 4 sc, inc around (36). Round 7: 5 sc, inc around (42). The base should measure close to 3½ inches across.
  2. Work one round of sc in BLO (42) to create the crisp turning ridge.
  3. Work 8 rounds of sc around with no increases. Keep the basket sides upright; if they flare, use a slightly smaller hook for the next round.
  4. For the rim, work one round of hdc around, then one round of sc. Fasten off invisibly and weave the tail down the inside wall.

Removable lid — brown, 6 mm hook

The lid is a flat disk rather than a second bowl, so it rests lightly over the rim.

  1. Make a magic ring and work 6 sc. Increase evenly in the next five rounds to 36 stitches (12, 18, 24, 30, 36). Check that the disk lies flat.
  2. Work one plain round of sc. If the lid is still smaller than the rim, add a second plain round; if it ripples, omit that round.
  3. Work a final round of sl st or loose sc. Fasten off and weave in the end.
  4. For the handle, attach brown yarn at the centre, chain 8, and slip stitch back into the same centre point. Work sc around the chain loop once, then slip stitch to the centre and hide both tails on the underside.

Fit and finishing

Place the dumpling in the basket before final finishing. It should sit below the rim without forcing the sides outward. If it is tight, remove one body round from the dumpling; if it is loose, add a little stuffing or one body round before closing. The lid should cover the opening while remaining easy to lift by its loop.

Use the set as a shelf decoration, a tiny gift box for wrapped sweets, or a calming pocket object. Because the pieces are small, keep safety eyes, stuffing, and chenille fibres away from babies and pets. This is decorative play food, not real food, and it should not be given to children who may chew or swallow parts.

Credit and variations

Sweet Softies is credited for the original Perfect Fit Dumpling and Basket concept. The round counts, shaping, facial placement, and lid construction on this page are HookElla’s own recipe. Try cream, pale pink, or sage yarn for the dumpling, and add a second brown shade for a woven-looking basket rim.
