An original HookElla maze blanket

The Teal Labyrinth Blanket is built from staggered rectangular turns that travel through a field of deep teal. A pale variegated yarn brings flashes of aqua, blue, white, and soft lilac to the raised pathways, giving the geometry movement without losing its crisp structure.

This is a complete HookElla pattern. The written repeat below is original to this project and contains everything needed to make the photographed 32 × 42 inch (81 × 107 cm) throw.

The pattern uses US crochet terminology and is best for an intermediate crocheter who is comfortable counting stitches, identifying front and back loops, and reading repeated row instructions.

Finished measurements and construction

After gentle blocking, the blanket measures approximately 32 inches wide × 42 inches long (81 × 107 cm), including the double border.

The main panel contains 154 stitches:

  • 2 edge stitches;
  • five 30-stitch motif repeats; and
  • 2 edge stitches.

The foundation and setup establish the width. The 30-row labyrinth sequence is then worked six times. Two plain closing rows settle the final colour change before the border is added.

Yarn and materials

  • Colour A: 1,180 m (1,290 yd) deep teal DK / #3 acrylic yarn
  • Colour B: 885 m (968 yd) variegated aqua, pale blue, white, and soft lilac DK / #3 acrylic yarn
  • 4.0 mm (G) crochet hook
  • Locking stitch markers
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Blocking mats and rustproof pins

The estimates include a gauge swatch, generous row tails, and the solid-teal double border. For yarns with approximately 295 m per 100 g ball, plan on four balls of Colour A and three balls of Colour B. Buy one extra ball of either colour if your gauge is looser or you want a larger border.

Gauge

19.5 stitches × 17.5 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in the blocked overlay mosaic pattern.

Make a swatch using one complete 30-stitch repeat plus four edge stitches. Measure the centre of the washed and dried swatch. Stitch gauge controls width; row gauge controls length. Change hook size if necessary before beginning the blanket.

Abbreviations

  • A - Colour A, deep teal
  • B - Colour B, variegated contrast
  • BLO - back loop only
  • ch - chain
  • FL - front loop
  • FLdc - front-loop double crochet worked two rows below
  • RS - right side
  • sc - single crochet
  • sl st - slip stitch
  • st(s) - stitch(es)

Special stitches and pattern rules

Back-loop single crochet (BLO sc)

Insert the hook under the back loop of the next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through both loops. The unused front loop remains available for a later dropped stitch.

Front-loop double crochet two rows below (FLdc)

Yarn over, insert the hook under the free front loop of the stitch directly two rows below, yarn over and pull up a loop to the height of the current row, then complete the double crochet. Skip the stitch immediately behind the FLdc on the previous row. One FLdc always occupies one stitch position, so the row count does not change.

Working method

  • Work every row from the RS; do not turn.
  • Use one colour per row and alternate A and B.
  • Begin each new row at the right edge with a 6–8 inch tail.
  • Fasten off after every row, leaving another 6–8 inch tail.
  • The beginning chain does not count as a stitch.
  • Number motif positions 1–30 from the first stitch encountered in each repeat.
  • On every pattern row, work FLdc at the listed motif positions and BLO sc in every unlisted motif position.

Foundation and setup

With A, ch 155.

Foundation Row (A): Sc in the second ch from the hook and in every ch across - 154 sts. Fasten off.

Return to the right edge for every new row.

Setup Row (B): Ch 1, BLO sc in every st across - 154 sts. Fasten off.

Place markers after stitch 2, then after every 30 stitches across. Four stitches remain outside the five marked motif repeats: two at each edge.

Teal Labyrinth 30-row repeat

For every row below, work 2 BLO sc, complete the 30-stitch motif instruction five times, then work 2 BLO sc. This always gives 154 stitches.

Inside each 30-stitch motif, work FLdc at the listed positions and BLO sc in all other positions. Alternate colours exactly as shown. Fasten off after every row and return to the right edge.

  1. Row 1 (A): FLdc at 2–7, 12–18, and 23–28.

Construction overview

The blanket begins as a long teal foundation with the first contrast pathways forming above it. Each 30-row block adds a staggered set of rectangular turns. Repeating the block across five marked sections keeps the geometry aligned while the colour changes in yarn B travel naturally through the raised lines.

Six-stage HookElla construction guide showing a teal overlay mosaic crochet blanket growing from its foundation to a double-bordered rectangle

The six stages show the panel growing from its first repeat to the completed double-bordered blanket. The written rows above control stitch placement.

After the sixth repeat, work the two closing rows:

Closing Row 1 (A): Ch 1, BLO sc in every st across - 154 sts. Fasten off.

Closing Row 2 (B): Ch 1, BLO sc in every st across - 154 sts. Fasten off.

Do not weave the side tails individually. Smooth them toward the outer edge so they can be enclosed by the border.

Resizing the blanket

Use this foundation formula:

Foundation stitches = 30 × number of motif repeats + 4 edge stitches

Chain one more than the required foundation stitch count. At the stated gauge, each additional width repeat adds approximately 6.15 inches (15.4 cm) before the border.

For length, add or remove complete 30-row blocks. Each block adds approximately 6.75 inches (17.1 cm) at the stated row gauge. Keep the setup and two closing rows for every size.

Useful planning sizes before final blocking:

  • Baby blanket: four repeats across and four blocks tall; 124 foundation stitches, ch 125
  • Lap blanket: five repeats across and five blocks tall; 154 foundation stitches, ch 155
  • HookElla throw: five repeats across and six blocks tall; 154 foundation stitches, ch 155
  • Wide throw: six repeats across and six blocks tall; 184 foundation stitches, ch 185

Measure a blocked swatch before buying yarn or relying on estimated dimensions. Multiply yarn quantities in proportion to the number of 30-stitch × 30-row blocks, then add approximately 15% for edges, tails, swatching, and the border.

Solid-teal double border

The border forms two narrow flaps from the same base round. The row tails sit between them, and the outer edges are joined to create a clean envelope.

Base round

Lay the blanket RS up and arrange the tails flat along the side edges. With A, join at the top-right corner.

  1. Sc in every stitch across the top.
  2. Work 3 sc in the corner.
  3. Down the first side, work approximately 2 sc for every 3 row ends, catching only the panel edge and leaving the tails free behind the stitches. Adjust by a stitch if necessary so the edge lies flat.
  4. Work 3 sc in the lower corner.
  5. Sc in every foundation stitch across the bottom.
  6. Repeat the same side-edge rate up the second side and place 3 sc in the final corner.
  7. Join with a sl st to the first sc.

Count the two side edges and make them identical. If the base round ripples, remove a few side stitches; if it pulls inward, add them evenly.

Front flap

Front Round 1: Ch 1. Working in the BLO of the base round, sc in each st around. In the centre stitch of every 3-sc corner, work 3 sc. Join.

Front Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, working 3 sc in each centre corner stitch. Join and fasten off.

Back flap

Turn the blanket WS up. The unused front loops of the base round are visible around the edge.

Back Round 1: Join A in an unused loop at the top-right corner. Ch 1 and sc in each unused loop around, with 3 sc in each corner loop. Join.

Back Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, with 3 sc in each centre corner stitch. Join but do not fasten off.

Enclose the tails

Trim the row tails so they fit comfortably inside the border without reaching the outer edge. Lay them flat between the front and back flaps. Holding both outer rounds together, sl st through the corresponding stitch of both layers all the way around. At each corner, match the three corner stitches one for one. Join and fasten off.

The border should feel firm but not tight. Steam only from a safe distance if the acrylic yarn label permits it.

Finishing and blocking

Weave in the foundation, closing-row, and border ends. Soak or mist the blanket according to the yarn labels, remove excess water without twisting, and lay it flat. Pin the corners first, then ease the long edges to approximately 32 × 42 inches (81 × 107 cm). Allow it to dry completely before unpinning.

Avoid high heat on acrylic. A light wash and flat dry are usually enough to relax the mosaic fabric and settle the double border.

Troubleshooting

  • The motif shifts sideways: One stitch was added or skipped. Every row must contain 154 stitches; an FLdc replaces the stitch directly behind it.
  • The raised stitch looks short: Pull the FLdc loop up to the height of the current row before completing the stitch.
  • The panel narrows: Make sure each 30-stitch repeat begins at its marker and that every unlisted position receives one BLO sc.
  • The side edge ripples: Reduce the base-border rate below two stitches for every three row ends in the wavy area.
  • The side edge pulls inward: Add a few base-round stitches evenly before making the two border flaps.
  • The border feels bulky: Trim the enclosed tails to staggered lengths and spread them rather than stacking every end in one spot.
  • The variegated colour pools: Start the next ball from a different point in its colour sequence, or alternate balls between repeat blocks.

The repeating count makes the Teal Labyrinth Blanket meditative once the first block is established: one colour per row, a small set of marked positions, and a crisp raised pathway that grows across the teal ground.

Helpful questions

Is the complete Teal Labyrinth pattern included here?

Yes. The foundation count, original 30-stitch motif, all 30 written pattern rows, resizing formula, double border, and finishing instructions are included on this page and in the printable HookElla PDF.

What size is the finished blanket?

At the stated blocked gauge, the blanket measures approximately 32 × 42 inches, or 81 × 107 cm, including the narrow double border.

How is the raised labyrinth texture made?

Each row uses one colour. Back-loop single crochet forms the ground, while front-loop double crochet worked two rows below creates the raised turns and pathways.

How much yarn do I need?

Allow approximately 1,180 m (1,290 yd) of deep teal DK yarn and 885 m (968 yd) of variegated DK yarn. These amounts include swatching, the blanket panel, row tails, and the double border.

Can I resize the blanket?

Yes. Use a foundation stitch count of 30 times the desired number of repeats plus four edge stitches. Add or remove complete 30-row repeat blocks for length.

What happens to all the row tails?

Leave 6–8 inch tails at both ends of every row. They are arranged inside the two-layer solid-teal envelope border, so no individual weaving is required along the sides.
