This cozy adult beanie starts at the crown and grows in joined rounds. A simple single-crochet crown transitions into a chunky moss-stitch body, then two back-loop rounds make the narrow ridged lower edge. The directions below are an independently developed HookElla construction—not Pam Carr’s Kathryn Beanie pattern.

About this pattern

The Blossom Pink Moss-Stitch Beanie is a softly textured, adult-size hat with a rounded crown, chunky pink fabric, and a slim ridged edge. It is worked from the top down in joined rounds: first a small single-crochet circle, then a moss-stitch body, followed by two rounds of single crochet through the back loop only. There is no separate brim, sewn-on piece, pom-pom, or added decoration.

The stitch sequence below is an original HookElla construction using standard crochet stitches. The landscape beanie photo is the finished-project reference. The tall infographic is only a selection of visual milestones; use the written round instructions for every count and placement. This pattern has not been physically sample-tested, so dimensions are planning estimates rather than measured results.

Materials

  • Approximately 70–90 yd (64–82 m) of super bulky / category #6 yarn in blossom pink. Have about 100 yd (91 m) available; actual use varies with yarn thickness, hook, and tension. The attached project imagery identifies Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in Blossom Pink as the pictured yarn.
  • 10 mm (N/P) crochet hook, or a size that gives the target gauge and a fabric that is warm but not stiff.
  • Stitch marker, tapestry needle, scissors, and tape measure.

Finished size and fit

One adult size is fully written. The target circumference is approximately 22 6/7 in (58 cm) relaxed, calculated from 40 pattern positions at the target horizontal gauge below. It is intended for an adult head measuring about 22–23 in (56–58.5 cm); the chain-space fabric has some give, but it is not physically fit-tested.

The estimated total depth is about 9 1/2–10 in (24–25.5 cm). This is a planning projection from 17 rounds at the target average of 7 rounds per 4 in: 17 × 4 ÷ 7 = 9.71 in. Because the crown and lower edge use single crochet rather than moss stitch, their round heights may differ from the moss-stitch gauge. Measure the in-progress hat and treat the final depth as an estimate, not a guaranteed measurement.

Gauge

In the moss-stitch section, target 7 pattern positions across × 7 rounds high = 4 in (10 cm). For this pattern, one position is either one single crochet or one chain-1 space. The horizontal circumference projection uses all 40 positions (20 single crochets plus 20 chain spaces): 40 × 4 ÷ 7 = 22 6/7 in (about 58 cm).

To make a circular gauge swatch, chain 16 and join without twisting. Round 1: ch 1, sc in each chain around; join to the first sc (16 sc). Round 2: ch 1, repeat [sc in next st, ch 1, skip next st] 8 times; join to the first sc (8 sc + 8 ch-1 spaces = 16 positions). Round 3: ch 1, repeat [sc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, skip next sc] 8 times; join to the first sc. Repeat Round 3 until you have at least 8 rounds total. Lay it flat without stretching and measure 7 adjacent positions and 7 rounds near the center. Change hook size and swatch again if needed. A crochet gauge calculator can help convert a measured swatch to stitches per inch; it cannot assess stretch or guarantee hat fit.

Abbreviations (US terms)

  • BLO — back loop only
  • ch — chain
  • MR — adjustable magic ring
  • rep — repeat
  • sc — single crochet
  • sl st — slip stitch
  • st(s) — stitch(es)

Special stitches and construction notes

Moss-stitch round: A repeated single crochet and chain-1 space creates the lightly open, pebbled texture. In the body rounds, work each new single crochet into the previous round’s chain-1 space, then chain 1 and skip the next single crochet. Each round has 20 sc and 20 chain spaces, or 40 total positions.

Single crochet back loop only (sc BLO): Insert the hook under only the back loop of the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through both loops. Working in the back loop makes the narrow raised ridges at the lower edge.

Beginning ch 1 does not count as a stitch. Join each round with a slip stitch to the first actual stitch, not to the beginning chain or joining slip stitch. Do not turn. Place a marker in the first stitch if useful. Count the chain spaces as positions in moss-stitch rounds, but not as stitches in the single-crochet rounds.

Complete crochet instructions

Crown: Rounds 1–5

With pink yarn, make an MR. Keep the starting tail long enough to close the small center hole securely after the crown is complete.

  • Round 1: Ch 1, work 8 sc into the MR. Pull the ring snug. Join with sl st to the first sc. 8 sts.
  • Round 2: Ch 1, work 2 sc in each st around. Join to the first sc. 16 sts.
  • Round 3: Ch 1, repeat [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 8 times. Join to the first sc. 24 sts.
  • Round 4: Ch 1, repeat [sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st] 8 times. Join to the first sc. 32 sts.
  • Round 5: Ch 1, repeat [sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st] 8 times. Join to the first sc. 40 sts.

Each of Rounds 2–5 adds 8 stitches: 8 → 16 → 24 → 32 → 40. The increases are evenly spaced by the bracketed repeat; do not work into the joining slip stitch or beginning chain.

Moss-stitch body: Rounds 6–14

  • Round 6: Ch 1. Repeat [sc in next st, ch 1, skip next st] 20 times. Join with sl st to the first sc. 20 sc + 20 ch-1 spaces = 40 positions.
  • Round 7: Ch 1. Repeat [sc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, skip next sc] 20 times. Join with sl st to the first sc. 20 sc + 20 ch-1 spaces = 40 positions.
  • Rounds 8–14: Repeat Round 7 exactly seven more times. At the end of each round, join to the first sc, not to the ch-1 space. Each round remains 20 sc + 20 ch-1 spaces = 40 positions.

At the beginning of Rounds 7–14, the first ch-1 space is the space immediately following the joined first sc of the previous round. The last repeat works into the final ch-1 space and skips the first sc; then join to that first sc. This placement keeps 20 chain spaces and 20 single crochets in every round without increasing the circumference.

Convert to the lower edge: Rounds 15–17

  • Round 15: Ch 1. Sc in the first sc after the join, then alternate sc in the next ch-1 space, sc in the next sc around. After the 20th sc in a chain space, join to the first sc. 40 sc.
  • Round 16: Ch 1, sc BLO in each st around. Join to the first sc. 40 sc BLO.
  • Round 17: Ch 1, sc BLO in each st around. Join to the first sc. 40 sc BLO.

Fasten off, leaving a short tail. Thread it through the final loop and snug it down. Weave in the end on the inside without pulling the lower edge tight. The two BLO rounds create the narrow ridged edge shown in the finished photo; do not add a separate band.

Assembly

The crown, moss-stitch body, and ridged edge are worked as one piece in joined rounds, so there is no panel seam or separate brim to attach. The only closure is the small adjustable-ring opening at the crown: use the starting tail to close it securely from the inside.

Finishing and care

Use the starting tail to close any remaining center hole with a few small stitches, then weave it securely into the inside of the crown. Weave in the final end. Shape the hat gently with your hands; avoid stretching the chain spaces. Follow the yarn label for washing and drying, and reshape the edge while damp. Do not add a pom-pom or other decoration if you want the photographed plain pink finish.

Fit adjustments and troubleshooting

  • Circumference: First check the gauge and try the hat on after Round 14. The 40-position circumference is designed for the single adult size stated above. If it is too tight or loose, change hook size and recheck a full gauge swatch; adding or removing crown increases changes both crown diameter and circumference.
  • Crown ripples: Confirm that Rounds 2–5 end at 16, 24, 32, and 40 stitches. Extra stitches can make the crown ruffle; missed increases can make it cup too sharply.
  • Open or uneven moss texture: Check that each body round has 20 sc and 20 chain spaces, and that each sc in Rounds 7–14 goes into a chain space—not into a single crochet.
  • Edge flares: Make sure Round 15 contains exactly 40 sc, one in each previous sc and one in each chain space. Keep Round 16–17 at 40 stitches and do not work into joins.
  • Height differs: Round height varies with yarn and tension. Measure the hat as it grows rather than relying on the 9 1/2–10 in estimate; this pattern has not been sample-tested.

Frequently asked questions

Is the infographic the full pattern?

No. It shows selected visual stages only. Follow the numbered written rounds above for the complete instructions and stitch counts.

Can I use a lighter yarn?

The pattern is sized and gauged for super bulky #6 yarn with a 10 mm hook. A lighter yarn will change the texture, dimensions, and yardage; it would need a separately recalculated pattern and is not covered here.

Is the pattern physically tested?

No. The count sequence, joins, and gauge arithmetic have been reviewed, but no sample has been made. The circumference is a gauge-based projection and the depth is an estimate because the crown and lower edge use different stitches from the moss section.

Helpful questions

Is this the Kathryn Beanie pattern?

No. This is an independently written HookElla pattern with its own stitch counts and round sequence. Pam Carr’s original design is credited at the end; her instructions are not reproduced here.

Is the beanie physically tested?

No. The round arithmetic and gauge-based estimates were reviewed, but no sample was crocheted. Check your gauge and try the hat on as you work.

Can I use a different super-bulky yarn?

Yes, if it makes a similarly dense, flexible fabric at the target gauge. A different fiber or yarn thickness can change yardage, drape, and fit, so swatch before starting.

How can I adjust the circumference?

This page fully specifies one adult size. Do not add crown increases casually: each extra increase changes the crown diameter and the body circumference. For another size, recalculate the crown and swatch the moss-stitch round before altering the pattern.

Does this pattern include a pom-pom or separate brim?

No. The beanie has no pom-pom or added brim. Its final two rounds form a narrow ridged edge directly on the hat.
