A matching pair for yarn and home storage

The Cozy Boho Basket Duo includes a roomy ivory basket with caramel pom-poms and a smaller basket with soft tassels. Each basket begins with a flat circular base, turns upward at a back-loop round, and grows into simple, sturdy single-crochet walls. The large size is about 10 inches (25 cm) across; the small size is about 7 inches (18 cm) across.

The pattern uses US crochet terms and continuous rounds. Use a firm super-bulky yarn and a hook that gives you a close fabric. The baskets are intended for lightweight household storage, not as toys or load-bearing containers.

Materials

  • Super-bulky / #6 yarn: about 200–250 yd (183–229 m) or 350–450 g ivory for the large basket; 100–125 yd (91–114 m) or 175–225 g ivory for the small basket
  • Caramel yarn: about 100–130 yd (91–119 m) total for five large pom-poms and six small tassels
  • 10 mm crochet hook, or size needed to meet gauge
  • Stitch markers, scissors, yarn needle, measuring tape
  • A piece of sturdy cardboard about 2–2¼ in (5–5.5 cm) wide for the pom-poms and 3½ in (9 cm) wide for the tassels

A firm cotton cord or cotton-blend yarn helps the baskets hold their shape. Yardage varies substantially between super-bulky yarns, so check the length on the ball band and allow extra for the trims or a gauge swatch. Avoid very stretchy or loosely spun roving if you want upright walls.

Gauge and finished measurements

Gauge: 5½ single crochet stitches and 5½ rounds = 4 in (10 cm) in a firm single-crochet fabric. At this gauge, 42 stitches around make a base about 9¾ in (25–26 cm) across, and 30 stitches make a base about 7 in (18 cm) across. Gauge is especially useful for the base diameter; check it before committing to the wall rounds.

With the stated round counts, the large basket is about 6 in (15 cm) tall and the small basket about 4½ in (11.5 cm) tall, including the finished rim. Height is easy to adjust by adding or removing wall rounds.

Abbreviations and pattern notes

  • BLO — back loop only
  • inc — work 2 single crochet in the same stitch
  • MR — adjustable magic ring
  • sc — single crochet
  • sl st — slip stitch
  • st(s) — stitch(es)

Work in a continuous spiral; do not join rounds. Place a marker in the first stitch and move it up as you work. The turning round is worked in the back loop only and has no increases. All later wall rounds are worked through both loops. Counts are given after each base round and remain the same through the walls.

Large pom-pom basket

With ivory yarn, make an MR. Work tightly and keep the circle flat.

Circular base

  1. Round 1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. Round 2: Inc in each st around. (12)
  3. Round 3: Sc, inc; repeat around. (18)
  4. Round 4: 2 sc, inc; repeat around. (24)
  5. Round 5: 3 sc, inc; repeat around. (30)
  6. Round 6: 4 sc, inc; repeat around. (36)
  7. Round 7: 5 sc, inc; repeat around. (42)

Measure the base flat from edge to edge. It should be close to 10 inches (25 cm). Weave the starting tail through the MR and pull the center closed.

Turn and make the walls

Turning round: Sc in the BLO of each st around. (42)

Wall rounds 1–7: Sc in each st around. (42 each round)

The turning round plus seven wall rounds make a wall about 5¾ inches tall at gauge; the finished basket is close to 6 inches tall with its rim. Add or remove even rounds if you prefer a shorter or taller basket, while keeping the stitch count at 42.

Firm rim

Work one round of sl st loosely in each stitch around. Keep the slip stitches relaxed so the opening does not draw inward. Join with a sl st, fasten off, and weave the end through the inside of the rim.

Small tassel basket

With ivory yarn, make an MR.

Circular base

  1. Round 1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. Round 2: Inc in each st around. (12)
  3. Round 3: Sc, inc; repeat around. (18)
  4. Round 4: 2 sc, inc; repeat around. (24)
  5. Round 5: 3 sc, inc; repeat around. (30)

Measure the base flat; it should be close to 7 inches (18 cm) across. Tighten the MR securely.

Turning round: Sc in the BLO of each st around. (30)

Wall rounds 1–5: Sc in each st around. (30 each round)

Finish with one loose sl st in each stitch around for the rim. Join, fasten off, and weave in the tail. The turning round and five wall rounds make a basket about 4½ inches (11.5 cm) tall at gauge.

Construction overview showing the Cozy Boho Basket Duo’s circular base, single-crochet walls, pom-pom trim, tassel trim, and finished baskets

The image shows the project sequence and finished trim; use the written counts above for both basket sizes.

Caramel pom-poms for the large basket

Make 5 pom-poms, each about 1¾–2 in (4.5–5 cm) across. Wrap caramel yarn around the 2–2¼-inch cardboard strip about 45–55 times. Slide the bundle off carefully, tie a separate length of yarn very tightly around the center, and knot it several times. Cut through the folded loops on both sides, then trim the pom-pom into a round shape. Leave the two center ties long for sewing.

Place the five pom-poms around the large basket, centered on wall round 6. Evenly space their anchor points around the 42-stitch round; approximate stitch positions are 1, 9, 17, 26, and 34. Thread both tie ends through the wall to the inside, knot them together securely, and weave the ends into the dense fabric. Tug each pom-pom gently to check the attachment.

Caramel tassels for the small basket

Make 6 tassels, each about 3½ in (9 cm) long before final trimming. Wrap caramel yarn around the 3½-inch cardboard strip about 25–30 times. Tie a separate strand tightly around one end of the bundle to make the top loop. Wrap another strand around the bundle about ¾ in (2 cm) below the top several times, knot it, and hide its ends inside the tassel. Cut the loops at the opposite end and trim the fringe evenly.

Attach one tassel to every fifth stitch around small basket wall round 4, one round below the rim. Sew each top loop through the basket wall several times with a yarn needle, then bring both ends to the inside, knot securely, and weave them through nearby stitches. Check that no long tails remain loose inside the basket.

Finishing, care, and safe use

Weave in every end and check each trim attachment. If the basket walls soften, place a removable cardboard or plastic canvas circle in the base; do not sew in a rigid insert unless you can remove it for cleaning. Shape the baskets by hand and let them rest empty so the sides settle upright.

Follow the yarn label for cleaning. Spot-clean when practical, and reshape while damp if the yarn permits washing. Keep the baskets for light household storage—yarn, folded throws, hooks, or craft notions. Do not use them for heavy loads, as pet beds, or as toys; keep pom-poms and tassels away from small children and pets.

Helpful questions

How wide are the two baskets?

At the stated gauge, the large basket is about 9¾–10 inches across and the small basket is about 7 inches across. Yarn thickness and tension affect the final measurement.

What yarn is best for a sturdy basket?

Choose a firm, low-stretch super-bulky

Can I change the basket height?

Yes. Work more or fewer even single-crochet rounds after the turning round. This changes height only; changing the diameter requires changing the base stitch count and checking the base measurement.

What should I store in the baskets?

They are suited to yarn, folded throws, craft supplies, and other light household items. They are not toys, pet beds, laundry hampers, or load-bearing containers.
