This playful crochet popcorn bucket turns a few simple rounds into a whole movie-night prop. The red bucket has a crisp white rim, a friendly embroidered face, and a handful of soft popcorn pieces that can be scooped, served, and packed away.
A sweet pretend-play project for movie night
The Crochet Popcorn Bucket & Popcorn Play Set is a small project with lots of play value. The bucket works as a pretend concession stand prop, a photo accessory, or cheerful shelf decor. Its simple single-crochet fabric is sturdy enough for little hands, while the separate popcorn pieces can be counted, served, and stored inside.
This is an original HookElla pattern written from the supplied construction stages. It is not a reproduction of another designer’s pattern or image.
Finished size and materials
The sample bucket measures approximately 6 in (15 cm) across and 4½ in (11.5 cm) tall, including the white rim. Each popcorn piece is about 1½–2 in (4–5 cm), depending on how firmly it is stuffed.
Gather:
- worsted/#4 yarn in red for the bucket body;
- white yarn for the rim;
- pale yellow and cream yarn for popcorn;
- 4.0 mm (G/6) hook for the bucket;
- 3.5 mm (E/4) hook for the popcorn;
- small amount of black yarn for eyes and smile;
- optional pink or white yarn for cheeks;
- polyester fiberfill;
- yarn needle, scissors, stitch marker, and measuring tape.
Abbreviations (US terms)
MR magic ring, ch chain, sc single crochet, sl st slip stitch, st stitch, BLO back loop only, inc 2 sc in one stitch, dec sc two stitches together, rep repeat.
Gauge and safety
Gauge is not critical, but the bucket fabric should be dense. A useful target is about 16–18 sc across 4 inches with the 4 mm hook. If stuffing shows through, use a smaller hook or tighten your tension.
The popcorn pieces are small removable parts. They are not suitable for babies or children who mouth toys. Supervise play, inspect seams regularly, and store every piece out of reach when the set is not being used.
Crochet bucket pattern
1. Build the flat base in red
Work in continuous rounds and mark the first stitch of each round.
- Make an MR and crochet 6 sc into it.
- Round 2: inc around — 12 sc.
- Round 3: (sc, inc) around — 18 sc.
- Round 4: (2 sc, inc) around — 24 sc.
- Continue adding 6 stitches per round: (3 sc, inc), (4 sc, inc), and so on.
- Stop when the circle measures close to 6 inches across. Depending on yarn, you will usually have 10–12 increase rounds.
Keep the circle flat. If it cups, add an increase in the next round; if it ripples, remove the last increase round and smooth the spacing.
2. Turn the bucket walls
Work one round of sc through BLO without increases. This turning round creates a clean lower edge and helps the next stitches rise vertically.
Continue in regular sc around for approximately 2 inches. Keep the stitch count steady and check that the opening remains round. For a taller bucket, add more even rounds before beginning the rim.
3. Add the white popcorn rim
Join white yarn at the back of the bucket.
- Work one round of sc in both loops.
- Work a second round of sc, keeping the tension even.
- For a slightly rolled concession-stand edge, work a third round in BLO, then fasten off. For a flatter edge, stop after two rounds.
Use a needle join, weave both colour tails inside the fabric, and trim only after they are secure.

The HookElla construction image shows the intended sequence and proportions.
Embroider the friendly face
Place the bucket upright and mark the face before stitching. Position two small black eyes several rounds below the rim, leaving enough space for the smile. Use short satin stitches or securely sewn black buttons only if the finished item is for older children under supervision.
For the safest play version, embroider everything:
- Stitch each eye with several horizontal passes.
- Add a curved smile using backstitch or simple surface stitches.
- Add tiny cheek marks in pink or white if desired.
- Knot the tails inside the bucket and bury them between stitches.
Do not use loose beads, safety eyes, or buttons for a baby-accessible toy.
Removable crochet popcorn pieces
Make 10–14 pieces in cream, pale yellow, or a blend of both shades.
- With the 3.5 mm hook, make an MR and work 6 sc into it.
- Round 2: inc in each stitch — 12 sc.
- Round 3: sc around, then sl st to close.
- Fasten off leaving a long tail. Add a small pinch of fiberfill.
- Draw the tail through the front loops of the remaining opening and pull gently to gather.
- Sew the gathered centre through the piece two or three times, then make two or three irregular loops or small bumps on top to suggest popped kernels.
- Hide the tail inside and trim securely.
Keep each piece lightly stuffed so it is squishy rather than hard. Vary the number of top bumps and use two colours to make the bucket look full without making every kernel identical.
Finishing the set
Weave in all ends and check every seam. Place the popcorn loosely in the bucket; do not glue pieces together or permanently attach them if children will be scooping and serving them. A small drawstring pouch can store the kernels between play sessions.
For a movie-night gift, pair the set with a crochet blanket, a picture book about going to the cinema, or a reusable snack bowl. For display, keep the bucket on a shelf with the popcorn pieces visible and away from pets and young children.
Troubleshooting
- Base is wavy: adjust the final increase round; the base must lie flat before the walls begin.
- Walls flare: an increase was added after the turning round; undo to the last even round.
- White rim puckers: loosen tension or remove one rim round.
- Face looks tilted: mark the centre front before stitching and count rounds between the rim and eyes.
- Popcorn loses shape: use less stuffing and gather the centre more firmly.
- Ends show inside: use a yarn needle to weave tails through several dense stitches before trimming.
Resize the bucket
For a mini bucket, stop the base at 4–5 inches and shorten the walls. For a larger storage or classroom prop, continue the increase rounds to 7–8 inches, then work the same BLO turning round and even walls. Scale the popcorn with a smaller or larger hook, but keep each piece soft and securely closed.
The proportions matter more than an exact round count: a flat base, vertical sides, contrasting rim, and enough room for the removable kernels will preserve the friendly popcorn-bucket shape.

Helpful questions
Is the popcorn edible?
No. This is a crochet pretend-play set. The popcorn pieces are soft fabric toys and should never be offered as food.
How large is the bucket?
The target size is about 6 inches across and 4½ inches tall, including the white rim. Tension and yarn thickness can change the result.
How many popcorn pieces should I make?
Make 10 to 14 pieces for a full-looking bucket, or add more for a generous movie-night pile. Use a mix of cream and pale yellow.
Can the face be omitted?
Yes. Leave the bucket plain, add simple stripes, or embroider a different expression with the same secure method.
Is this suitable for babies?
No. The removable popcorn pieces are small and can be a choking hazard. Keep the set away from babies and toddlers and supervise children during play.
Can I wash the set?
Spot-clean first. If your yarn and stuffing are washable, place pieces in a mesh bag and wash gently, then reshape and dry completely before returning them to play.
