This original HookElla pattern builds an adult beanie from one sideways panel, with a ribbed cuff worked into the same rows as an offset bobble body. The panel is seamed, gathered at the crown, and finished with a fold-over cuff.
About this pattern
The Ocean Pebble Beanie is an independently developed, one-color hat worked sideways as a flat rectangle. A 12-stitch half-double-crochet rib is built into every row beside a four-stitch bobble repeat. After the rectangle is seamed into a tube, the upper edge is gathered closed; the lower rib section folds up to make a deep cuff. A removable cream faux-fur pom-pom is optional.
This adult-medium HookElla original uses a standard 4-dc bobble texture. The supplied HookElla photos and infographic are retained as visual references for the deep teal colorway, sideways panel construction, integrated cuff, gathered crown, and pom-pom; their raised loop-petal surface differs from the bobble texture made by these written instructions. The distinction is noted so the photos are not mistaken for a stitch-by-stitch demonstration.
Materials
- 200–230 yd (183–210 m) worsted-weight #4 yarn in deep ocean teal. This is a planning estimate with a small reserve; yarn use varies with fiber, tension, and bobble depth.
- US H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to meet gauge.
- Tapestry needle, locking stitch marker, scissors, and tape measure.
- Optional large cream faux-fur pom-pom with a sew-on loop or secure button attachment.
Choose a soft, washable yarn with enough elasticity for a comfortable ribbed cuff. A smooth, tightly plied yarn makes the bobbles easier to see and count.
Finished size and fit
One adult-medium size is written: approximately 20¾ in (52.7 cm) relaxed circumference after joining, and about 11 in (28 cm) from the lower edge to crown before the cuff is folded. The 3 in (7.6 cm) ribbed section folds upward, leaving roughly 8 in (20 cm) of hat body below the gathered crown. The fabric should stretch to fit an adult head around 21–22 in (53–56 cm).
The circumference is the row dimension: 57 rows ÷ 11 rows per 4 in = about 20¾ in (52.7 cm). The height is the stitch dimension: 44 stitches ÷ 16 stitches per 4 in = 11 in (28 cm). Measurements are gauge calculations, not physical sample measurements.
Gauge and sizing check
With the 5 mm hook, the ribbed section should measure about 16 hdc stitches per 4 in (10 cm) across the row, and the complete panel should measure about 11 rows per 4 in (10 cm) along its row-count direction. Make a swatch that includes both the hdc rib and a few bobbles, wash and dry it as you plan to care for the hat, then measure without stretching.
For this single size, the stitch gauge controls hat height and cuff depth; row gauge controls circumference. Do not adjust the row count casually: the crown gather and motif repeat are designed around 57 rows. A significant gauge difference requires recalculating the panel and checking the finished fit before continuing.
Abbreviations (US terms)
- ch: chain
- hdc: half double crochet
- sc: single crochet
- st(s): stitch(es)
- BLO: back loop only
- rep: repeat
- RS / WS: right side / wrong side
The turning chain does not count as a stitch. Count the bobble’s locking pull-through as part of the bobble, not as an extra stitch.
Special stitches and construction notes
4-dc bobble (bobble): In the indicated stitch, work four unfinished double-crochet legs: yarn over, insert hook, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two loops; repeat that sequence three more times in the same stitch. There will be five loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all five loops. This closed bobble uses one stitch and counts as one stitch. Do not add a separate chain after it.
The panel has 44 stitches in every row. Its first 12 stitches form the integrated ribbed cuff; the remaining 32 stitches are the hat body, arranged as eight four-stitch repeats. Work hdc through the back loop only on every cuff row. Keep one marker at the boundary between cuff and body on the side you are currently working.
Rows alternate direction. Odd-numbered rows work from cuff toward crown; even-numbered rows begin at the crown edge and work back toward the cuff. The bobbles are made on the right-side body rows (Rows 3 and 5 of each block), so they project to the outside of the hat; plain sc body rows separate them.

Rows 2–5: This is one four-row block. Repeat the block 13 more times, ending after Row 57. There are 14 blocks (56 rows) plus the foundation row: 57 rows total, 44 sts in every row. Do not add another partial block. Fasten off with a long tail, about 30 in (76 cm), for the seam; use a separate tail for the crown gather.
Seam and crown closure
Lay the panel flat with RS facing up. Bring the foundation edge and Row 57 edge together, matching cuff to cuff and body to body. The long tail emerges at the crown end of Row 57; with it and a tapestry needle, mattress stitch the two edges from the crown edge toward the cuff. Work through corresponding stitch positions and keep the join flexible rather than pulling it tight. Secure the seam at the cuff edge; leave the upper end of the seam available to include in the crown gather.
Thread a separate length of matching yarn through the crown-side row-end loops, catching one loop from each of the 57 rows (on alternating rows this is the row’s first or last stitch). Pass through all loops a second time for strength. Pull gradually until the opening closes, then make several firm securing stitches across the gathered center. Weave the tail through the inside of the crown and seam. The gathered crown is formed by drawing in the top edge of the tube; there is no separate crown piece.
Construction image

The six-stage HookElla image is a visual overview of the sideways panel, integrated ribbing, seaming, crown gathering, and pom-pom. Its close-up shows a raised loop-petal surface; the written pattern instead uses the standard offset bobbles defined above. The featured photo has the same approved visual difference in texture. Both supplied files are used unchanged.
Assembly and finishing
Fold the first 12 hdc rows upward to form a cuff approximately 3 in (7.5 cm) deep. Adjust the fold evenly around the hat; do not sew the cuff down unless a fixed cuff is preferred. Weave in the remaining ends on the inside, following the fabric path for at least 2 in (5 cm) and changing direction once.
For the optional pom-pom, sew a cream faux-fur pom through its attachment loops to the gathered crown with several passes of strong matching yarn. A removable button-backed pom-pom may be used if its button is fully secured and the wearer can safely manage it. For young children, omit detachable embellishments that could become a choking hazard.
Wet-block gently only if the yarn label permits. Shape the cuff and bobble fabric by hand, then dry flat. Avoid pressing the bobbles flat with a hot iron.
Fit adjustments and troubleshooting
- Hat circumference: Change the number of four-row blocks only after swatching. Each additional four-row block adds about 1.45 in (3.7 cm) at the stated row gauge. The crown gather circumference and overall fit both change; this is not a graded size set.
- Hat height: Change the foundation stitch count while preserving 12 cuff stitches and a body count divisible by four. Each added body stitch adds about ¼ in (0.6 cm) at the stated stitch gauge, but may change how the crown gather sits.
- Panel edges curl: Recheck turning-chain tension and work the hdc BLO stitches under the back loop only. A slightly larger hook may help, but recheck both gauges.
- Bobbles look crowded: Check that each bobble uses exactly one body stitch and that each four-stitch repeat is worked eight times. The following plain sc row should leave 32 body stitches.
- Crown gathers into a point: Distribute the drawstring tension in small increments around all 57 row ends before securing the center.
- Seam feels bulky: Use mattress stitch through matching edge loops without catching both layers of the cuff fold.
Frequently asked questions
Will the bobble texture look exactly like the photos?
No. The photos show a raised loop-petal surface, while the written HookElla pattern creates offset 4-dc bobbles. The color, sideways construction, folded cuff, gathered crown, and pom-pom are the visual references; follow the written stitch directions for the fabric texture.
Is the pattern physically tested?
No physical test crochet is claimed. Stitch and measurement checks are calculated from the stated counts and gauge; fit and fabric should be confirmed with a swatch and sample before release.
Can I use a different yarn?
Use a smooth worsted-weight yarn that meets gauge and feels comfortable against the intended wearer’s skin. A different fiber or yarn construction can change stretch, drape, warmth, and yardage; swatch and wash it before making the hat.
